Habitat for Humanity Waukesha - Jefferson - Rock announced today a $350,000 grant from the Hendricks Family Foundation that will help fund the construction of 10 homes, five in the Town of Beloit and five in the City of Beloit, creating new homeownership opportunities for 10 local families. They will be the first Habitat homes built in Beloit since 2008. "This grant from the Hendricks Family Foundation is a springboard for our work in Rock County. We are excited to bring the mission of Habitat back to the community. However, getting all 10 homes built will take additional fundraising, community support and volunteer labor, so we are asking the Beloit community to help us keep the momentum going," said Melissa Songco, CEO of Habitat WJR. The investment reflects the Hendricks Family Foundation’s broader commitment to expanding housing opportunities across Beloit. "All types of housing are critical to a thriving community, and Habitat WJR has a proven track record of delivering quality, affordable starter homes that create a path to homeownership for local families. That is exactly why we chose to invest in this project," said Lisa Furseth, Executive Director of the Hendricks Family Foundation. The five Town of Beloit homes, called Avid Pointe, will be built on land donated by a member of the Hendricks family, and the five City of Beloit homes will be built in the Hackett neighborhood on lots donated by the City of Beloit. Partner families are selected through Habitat WJR's homeownership program, contributing sweat equity hours and completing financial education before closing on an affordable mortgage. Site preparation for the Town of Beloit homes is expected later this month, with the City of Beloit homes to follow next spring. All homes are expected to be completed by the end of 2027 or early 2028. Renderings of house designs, released alongside the announcement, show two of the proposed homes at 1117 and 1123 Highland Ave. in the City of Beloit's Hackett neighborhood and the five ranch-style Avid Pointe homes planned for the Town of Beloit site.

Hey Stateline! I'm just popping in to shout out one of our many beautiful parks. Big Hill Park in Beloit is one of those parks that makes you feel like you're somewhere else. For me, it's the topography. Northern Illinois and south central Wisconsin aren't exactly known for our rolling hills. It's pretty flat... everywhere. So when I'm surrounded by the giant trees, the sounds of nature, and some pretty majestic views, I almost forget that I'm only 15 minutes from home. Big Hill Park has a ton to offer including (but not limited too): • Big Hill Center - rentable facility and home to the Welty Center • Many bold and adventurous squirrels • 2 playgrounds • Birds with various singing abilities • Volleyball Courts • Majestic views of the Rock River • Trails • And so much more. The USS Beloit Legacy Foundation is inviting the community to meet members of the USS Beloit crew during a special Labor Day weekend visit to Beloit on September 5-6, 2026. Eight sailors from the USS Beloit, including Commander Jason DeJesus, will spend the weekend connecting with residents through a variety of community events. "The bond between the City of Beloit and the USS Beloit continues long after the ship's commissioning," said Drew Pennington, board member of the USS Beloit Legacy Foundation. "This visit is an opportunity for residents to meet the sailors who serve aboard our namesake ship and celebrate the unique relationship between the crew and our community." Public events include: Saturday, September 5 10 a.m. – Meet and Greet at the Beloit Farmers Market, Downtown Beloit Residents are encouraged to stop by and meet members of the USS Beloit crew, learn more about life aboard the Navy vessel, and hear firsthand about their service. 3 p.m. – Pickleball at Wootton Park, 1451 4th St Community members are invited to join crew members for an afternoon of pickleball and friendly competition. 6 p.m. – USS Beloit Night at the Beloit Sky Carp Game Join the crew at ABC Supply Stadium for USS Beloit Night. Proceeds from this fundraiser will benefit the USS Beloit Legacy Foundation. Fireworks are scheduled for after the game. Sunday, September 6 10:30 a.m. – Playground Visit at Turtle Island Playground, Riverside Park Families are invited to bring their children to meet crew members and enjoy one of Beloit's favorite playgrounds. As the topic of data centers generates heated discussion throughout the area, Beloit Public Library will host a special presentation of its popular The Civics Academy series aimed at helping residents understand both the potential benefits and concerns surrounding these hyperscale developments. Accurate Information about Data Centers: Economic, Energy, and Environmental Impacts will be presented from 12:00 -1:15 p.m. on Wednesday, August 19, at Beloit Public Library, located at 605 Eclipse Boulevard. Presenter Art Harrington will examine the economic, energy, and environmental considerations associated with data centers, including potential benefits and drawbacks. The goal is to give attendees facts they can use to better understand the issues and draw their own conclusions. Data centers have become a particularly timely issue locally, as local government bodies consider how to respond to development proposals while residents raise questions and concerns about their potential impacts. With strong opinions on both sides, The Civics Academy presentation is intended to provide something different: an opportunity to learn about the issue without advocating for or against data center development. Harrington is an attorney practicing environmental law at Godfrey & Kahn and an adjunct professor at Marquette University, where he has taught energy law since 2012. The Civics Academy is a Beloit Public Library educational series designed to help residents better understand issues that affect their community and participate more knowledgeably in civic life.
