The USS Beloit Legacy Foundation is inviting the community to meet members of the USS Beloit crew during a special Labor Day weekend visit to Beloit on September 5-6, 2026. Eight sailors from the USS Beloit, including Commander Jason DeJesus, will spend the weekend connecting with residents through a variety of community events. "The bond between the City of Beloit and the USS Beloit continues long after the ship's commissioning," said Drew Pennington, board member of the USS Beloit Legacy Foundation. "This visit is an opportunity for residents to meet the sailors who serve aboard our namesake ship and celebrate the unique relationship between the crew and our community." Public events include: Saturday, September 5 10 a.m. – Meet and Greet at the Beloit Farmers Market, Downtown Beloit Residents are encouraged to stop by and meet members of the USS Beloit crew, learn more about life aboard the Navy vessel, and hear firsthand about their service. 3 p.m. – Pickleball at Wootton Park, 1451 4th St Community members are invited to join crew members for an afternoon of pickleball and friendly competition. 6 p.m. – USS Beloit Night at the Beloit Sky Carp Game Join the crew at ABC Supply Stadium for USS Beloit Night. Proceeds from this fundraiser will benefit the USS Beloit Legacy Foundation. Fireworks are scheduled for after the game. As the topic of data centers generates heated discussion throughout the area, Beloit Public Library will host a special presentation of its popular The Civics Academy series aimed at helping residents understand both the potential benefits and concerns surrounding these hyperscale developments. Accurate Information about Data Centers: Economic, Energy, and Environmental Impacts will be presented from 12:00 -1:15 p.m. on Wednesday, August 19, at Beloit Public Library, located at 605 Eclipse Boulevard. Presenter Art Harrington will examine the economic, energy, and environmental considerations associated with data centers, including potential benefits and drawbacks. The goal is to give attendees facts they can use to better understand the issues and draw their own conclusions. Data centers have become a particularly timely issue locally, as local government bodies consider how to respond to development proposals while residents raise questions and concerns about their potential impacts. With strong opinions on both sides, The Civics Academy presentation is intended to provide something different: an opportunity to learn about the issue without advocating for or against data center development. Harrington is an attorney practicing environmental law at Godfrey & Kahn and an adjunct professor at Marquette University, where he has taught energy law since 2012. The Civics Academy is a Beloit Public Library educational series designed to help residents better understand issues that affect their community and participate more knowledgeably in civic life. From neighborhood block parties to our kickoff event at Vernon Park, National Night Out celebrates community and partnerships as we work together to make a safer city. Block parties will be held Tuesday, August 4, throughout the city. New this year, we are moving the kickoff event to Vernon Park, 934 Vernon Ave., for a special splash party from 4-5pm Tuesday, August 4. Community members who do not have a block party in their neighborhood are invited to spend time with water activities and other fun with our department. Ya-Mon-Fest is coming up THIS Saturday (7/25) at The Hog Cabin Saloon and you won't want to miss it! The event started back when Ricco owned the Pitchers Mound. He and one of his employees just wanted to play some v-ball, drink Red Stripe and Rum Punch all day and listen to reggae music. When that employee suddenly passed away a few years later, this event then became a fundraiser for her children for 10 years. Now it's a tournament that pays back 100% of the entry fee to the top 3 teams and it's competitive as ever! It's basically everyone's favorite day at the Hog! The new Financial Literacy Innovation Grant hopes to fund classrooms in the region to bring more financial literacy skills to the youth of our region! 🤑 But there isn't much time left to apply. Read on for all the details. Tell your teacher friends! The Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions has created a fund for the purpose of promoting innovation in the teaching of personal financial literacy in the classroom. Funds will be awarded through a competitive grant process by the Department of Public Instruction to schools, community organizations, and consortia to support the implementation of the Wisconsin Standards for Personal Financial Literacy in the classroom and the execution of the Act 60 Personal Financial Literacy graduation requirement. Grant awards are limited to one per applicant (up to $7,500). If applying as a consortium, applicants may request up to three times the grant amount (up to $22,500). Multiple schools within the same school district may each apply for a grant individually, or as part of a consortium. Grants may be used to engage students as active participants in financial literacy program development, foster cross-grade collaboration, explore school and community partnerships, and attend or create professional development opportunities for educators. For full details on eligible activity categories, view the Application Instructions for Financial Literacy Innovation Grants. Who is Eligible to Apply: all educators, principals, and administrators in public and private K-12 school districts or their equivalent in Wisconsin (CESA), and community-based organizations are eligible to apply at any school level: elementary, middle, or high school.
