There’s a new business in Roscoe that’s all about making moments feel a little bigger, a little brighter, and a lot more fun 🎈 Party Like a Rockstar Balloon Bar just opened up, and you can tell right away this isn’t just balloons… it’s full-on event energy. The owner is super passionate about turning everyday celebrations into something people actually remember, whether it’s birthdays, graduations, or something as special as Mother’s Day. And speaking of that… Mother’s Day is this Sunday. If you’re still thinking about doing something thoughtful, this is one of those ideas that stands out without overcomplicating things. A custom balloon setup can completely change the vibe. If you’re even considering it, don’t wait too long. These kinds of orders fill up quick, especially with a holiday coming up. Definitely worth reaching out before it’s too late. 📍 10514 Main St Roscoe, IL 61073 United States

If you’ve lived around the Stateline for any length of time, you’ve probably driven past The China Palace on Blackhawk Blvd in Rockton a hundred times. It’s one of those spots that feels like a permanent fixture of the community, and for good reason—they’ve been at it for over 45 years. I stopped in recently to grab a meal, and it reminded me why these long-standing family spots are so important to our local food scene. The Meal: A Warning for the Bold I went in with a pretty specific craving, so I started with a beer and some of the staples. You can’t go wrong with their wonton soup—it’s that classic, comforting broth that hits the spot right away. I followed that up with the crab rangoons, which were exactly what you want them to be: crispy, creamy, and gone way too fast. But then came the main event: extra spicy combination fried rice. Now, I usually tell people I like heat. I’ve had "spicy" at a lot of places where it’s more of a suggestion than a reality. That is not the case here. This rice didn’t just have a kick; it had a vendetta. It was so intense that I actually had tears rolling down my face while I was eating. It was painful, it was delicious, and I couldn’t stop. If you’re the type who thinks "extra spicy" is a challenge, The China Palace will gladly accept it. More Than Just a Restaurant What’s really cool about this place—and something I think a lot of people miss if they only take out—is the history inside the building. The China Palace is actually housed in what was once the "Junior Wagon Wheel," part of the legendary Wagon Wheel Resort era of Rockton. As a result, the interior is filled with these incredible historical artifacts. There are chandeliers and intricate woodwork that were salvaged from the Jacob Haish mansion in DeKalb before it was torn down. It gives the dining room this weirdly elegant, "time capsule" feel that you don't get in modern strip-mall joints. Why You Should Stop By The restaurant is run by the Kwok family, and they’ve been the heart and soul of the place since the 70s. While they’re known for Mandarin and Cantonese classics like Hunan Shrimp and their handmade egg rolls, it’s really the consistency and the story that keep people coming back. Whether you're looking for a quiet sit-down dinner surrounded by a bit of Rockton history or you want to see if you can handle the "tear-inducing" heat of their spicy fried rice, it’s a spot worth supporting. Just maybe keep a cold drink (and some napkins for your eyes) within reach if you go the extra spicy route. 📍625 S Blackhawk Blvd, Rockton, IL

The Best Kept Food Secret in Davis: Why Everyone is Talking About PJ’s Corner Sometimes the best experiences aren't found in the middle of a big city, but tucked away in the communities where locals have known the "secret" for years. That is exactly the case with PJ’s Corner in Davis, Illinois. After hearing non-stop praise about their menu and the atmosphere, I finally decided it was time to make the trip out and see what the buzz was all about. Walking into PJ’s, you immediately get that welcoming, small-town tavern feel where everyone belongs. I decided to head straight to the back of the bar first to check out the entertainment layout. For anyone who likes a bit of competition with their drinks, you’re in luck. They have a high-quality pool table and a dedicated darts area that’s well-maintained and ready for action. One of my favorite features was the digital DJ machine. There’s something special about being able to set the mood yourself by selecting your own playlist. It adds a layer of personalization to the night that makes hanging out with friends even better. You can’t visit PJ’s Corner without talking about the food. I went straight for the heavy hitter: their famous cheeseburger. Served with a side of perfectly seasoned fries, it absolutely lived up to the hype. It’s a classic, no-nonsense burger that hits the spot every single time. To wash it down, I tried a peach beer that was refreshing and crisp. While the specific name escapes me at the moment, the flavor was unforgettable—definitely ask the bartender what peach options they have when you visit. Whether you are coming off the lake after a long day or just driving through the area, PJ’s Corner offers a level of comfort and hospitality that’s hard to find. It’s more than just a bar; it’s a community hub where the music is good, the beer is cold, and the food is consistently excellent. It is no wonder this place is a favorite for Lake Summerset residents. Next time you're looking for a new spot to grab dinner or spend an evening, make the drive to Davis. You won’t be disappointed.

The Blender Cafe: Now More Than Just a Training Spot The Blender Cafe inside the Beloit Public Library is back open. It looks better than ever. It first opened in 2017 to help students learn job skills. Now it has grown into a full restaurant for the whole community. Hundreds of people visit the library every day. Before, they had to leave to find a good meal. Now they can stay and relax. The cafe was closed for a short time for construction. It is now open with a fresh look and a lot more to offer. The biggest change is the new head chef. Chef Lilly from Casa Bugambilia is now leading the kitchen. This means almost everything on the menu is made by hand. The menu has grown a lot. You can still get your favorites, but there are many new choices. Fresh Food: Handcrafted breakfast burritos, sourdough sandwiches, and a variety of wraps. Healthy Options: Fresh salads and hot soups made daily. Coffee Bar: A full espresso bar for lattes, plus frappes and hot teas. Treats: Handmade desserts and pastries like muffins and flan. Smoothies: The fan favorite fruit smoothies are still here. The mango pineapple is a must try. The cafe is now very kid friendly. It is right next to the new Discovery PLAYce. This is a large play area for children that is coming soon. Parents can grab a coffee or a snack while their kids explore and learn. If you have a meeting or a party, the cafe can help. They now offer full catering services. You can get their handmade food for your next local event. The Blender Cafe is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Next time you are at the library, make sure to stop by and see what Chef Lilly is cooking up.

If you haven’t made your way out to Hogs & Hydrants yet, it might be time. I stopped in to check it out and decided to try something called the Fire Bites… and yeah, they live up to the name. These zesty bites are packed with sweet corn, jalapeño, cream cheese, and bacon. It’s one of those combinations you don’t overthink, you just take a bite and instantly get it. I’ll be honest, I’m not a ranch guy at all, but the owner told me next time I have to try their homemade garlic ranch. Said it’s “to die for.” After trying the Fire Bites, I’m not even questioning it. This is one of those spots where you can tell they take pride in what they’re putting out.

f you ever come across the Lyna Boba Tea food truck in the stateline area, it’s definitely worth stopping to see what they have cooking. They offer a really nice mix of drinks and food, making it easy to find something whether you’re just looking for a quick snack or a full meal. I recently tried their egg rolls, and they were a great choice. I ordered six, and honestly, they were much bigger than they looked. My eyes were definitely a little bigger than my stomach. They were fried perfectly — nice and crunchy on the outside without being greasy — and packed with flavor. The dipping sauce that came with them was excellent too. I believe it was a sweet-and-sour style sauce, and it paired really well with the egg rolls. Beyond the egg rolls, Lyna Boba Tea has a menu with a lot of variety. They serve Boba Tea and Milk Tea, along with Sparkling Refreshers if you want something light and refreshing. On the food side, they offer Fresh Egg Rolls, Fresh Crab Rangoon, Korean Corn Dogs, Banh Mi, Shrimp Rolls, Sesame Balls, Shrimp Tempura, Deep Fried Rice Dumplings, Chicken Skewers, and even Pad Thai. There’s a little bit of everything, which makes it a great option for groups or anyone who likes to try new things. I picked up my order at the Beloit Winter Crafters Market, which is one of the places you can find them set up. If you don’t catch them there, you can also find their locations posted online to see where the food truck will be next. If you want to keep up with Lyna Boba Tea or check out their latest stops, you can find them on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/Lyna151 Overall, great food, lots of options, and a solid local food truck worth checking out when you see it around.

If you are looking for the absolute best chicken in the Stateline area, you need to put Bridge St. Pizza & Chicken Co. at the top of your list. Located right in Roscoe next to Sophia’s and Casey’s, this spot is serving up some serious comfort food that we just had to try for RockBuzz. We started with their famous jumbo chicken tenders, and the name is not an exaggeration. These things are massive, easily as big as my face. The breading was perfect with amazing flavor, and the best part is that they have about eight different sauces to choose from. You really can’t go wrong here. One of the biggest highlights was the Mac and Chick Bowl. It is a huge bowl of food filled with those jumbo tenders chopped up and mixed with mac and cheese. The pasta noodles are really high quality and you get to pick your sauce to drizzle over the top. I went with the chipotle mayo this time around, which was super tasty, but I already know I’m getting the Nashville Hot on my next visit. Of course, we had to try the pizza too. They do a thin crust that is exactly how I like it. We ordered the mac and cheese pizza, and as you can imagine, it was a massive success with my two girls. I honestly don’t think you could find a kid who wouldn't love that combination. We also sampled the classic bone in wings. I’m actually not a fan of those overly huge wings you see sometimes, so these were perfect for me. The skin was nice and crispy with plenty of flavor options. It is definitely something my wife would enjoy. Between the huge portions and the great flavors, this place is a total win. I ended up taking plenty of leftovers home, which is always a good sign. Whether you want to swing by for take out or just order through DoorDash, I give them a 10 out of 10 recommendation. It is probably the best place for chicken in the entire Stateline!

If you’re cruising through the Stateline area and find yourself with a serious breakfast sweet tooth, there is one place you absolutely have to visit. Sophia’s Restaurant in Roscoe isn’t just a local staple; it’s a destination for anyone who believes breakfast should occasionally double as dessert. Located at 5467 Bridge Street, this family-owned gem has been a community fixture since 1990. Walking in feels like stepping into a cozy "house atmosphere"—which makes sense, given its reputation as a place "where friends and family meet." While they serve everything from Friday night fish fries to their famous honey fried chicken, the breakfast menu is where things get truly legendary. The Sweet Tooth Lineup If you’re looking to satisfy a sugar craving, my recent visit proved that you really can’t go wrong with these three heavy hitters: The Banana Nutella Crepes: This isn't just a drizzle of chocolate; these crepes are loaded. They are perfectly folded, light, and packed with that classic hazelnut-banana combo that never fails. Oreo French Toast: If you’re a fan of cookies and cream, this is your holy grail. It’s thick-cut, fluffy, and treated like a canvas for crushed Oreos. It basically eats like a dessert, and I’m not complaining. Fluffy Pancakes with "The Works": These were the real showstoppers. Think thick, airy stacks topped with a mountain of whipped cream and—the best part—those crunchy, nostalgic toppings you usually only find at an ice cream parlor. It adds a texture you just don't get at your average diner. More Than Just Sweets The beauty of Sophia’s is the sheer variety. If you’re not in the mood for a sugar rush, their menu is massive. They offer everything from Swedish Pancakes (stuffed with options like lingonberries or apples) to an incredible lineup of Breakfast Bowls and skillets. Whether it’s the "Meat Lovers" with chorizo and ham or the "Philly Cheese Steak" skillet, the portions are famously generous. The service is exactly what you’d hope for in a local spot—fast, friendly, and they keep the coffee flowing. They are open daily from 6 AM to 9 PM, so even if you’re a late riser, you can still grab breakfast all day long. If you haven’t made the trip to Bridge Street yet, consider this your sign. Bring the family, bring your appetite, and definitely don't skip the whipped cream. 📍 5467 Bridge St, Roscoe, IL 61073

The Stateline Buzz: Getting a Fresh Cut at Cutthroat Corbin’s Finding a great barber is about more than just a quick haircut. It is about the skill, the tools, and the feeling you get when you walk through the door. At Cutthroat Corbin’s, they focus on traditional barbering with a style that never goes out of fashion. The shop has a very welcoming vibe. It is the kind of place where you can just hang out and relax while you wait for your turn in the chair. It feels like a community spot where everyone is welcome, but they still take their craft very seriously. When I sat down with the owner, Corbin, the first thing he did was talk to me. He didn’t just start cutting. He took the time to ask exactly what kind of look I wanted. This made sure we were both on the same page before any clippers even touched my hair. One of the best parts of the visit was the classic service. Corbin uses a straight razor to clean up the neck and mustache. You just can't get that same sharp, clean feeling with regular electric trimmers. It shows a real respect for the old-school way of doing things. The final result was exactly what I was hoping for. The taper fade was perfect—smooth, clean, and blended well. It is clear that the barbers here have put in the work to master these classic styles. If you are looking for a place to get a great haircut and enjoy a chill atmosphere, you need to check out Cutthroat Corbin’s. It is easily one of the best spots in the Stateline to sharpen up your look.

Check out Coco’s Tamales! Some of the best tamales I’ve had. Catch them at the Beloit Market! What makes them special is the owner, the chef behind the tamales. You can taste the authenticity. You can truly taste the years of tamale making, and every bite. These tamales were extremely moist and flavorful. I loved having the conversation with the owner and her telling me about how she was making tamales when she was a little girl with her grandma and still doing making them years later, you can truly taste the years of experience in every bite. Spotlight on Stateline Talent: Zack D. The Stateline community is full of creative talent, and sometimes we do not give our local artists enough recognition for the work they are putting in. One artist who continues to stand out is Zack D. His approach to music, his work ethic, and the way he connects with people make him someone worth paying attention to. Zack D. is building something meaningful through music. For him, it goes far beyond simply releasing songs or performing live. His music is rooted in legacy, connection, and long term impact. When I asked Zack D. why he started making music, his answer was simple and powerful. He wants to build a legacy. His goal is for his music to live on long after he is gone. He wants his children and future generations to be able to listen back and experience what he created. Music has always been part of his life. He grew up around sound, rhythm, and instruments, and he has been playing music for as long as he can remember. That early exposure shaped not only his skill, but also his love for the craft. One thing he shared that really stood out to me is how much live performance matters to him. There is something special that happens when you see listeners truly engage with your music in person. That connection is a big reason why he continues to create and perform. Zack D. creates music that blends pop, hip hop, and acoustic soul. The combination gives his sound a relatable and emotional feel while still staying modern and engaging. Whether you listen through headphones or hear his music live, it has a way of pulling you in. He is setting a strong pace for 2026 with a plan to release one song every month. Two songs are already out this year. It’s Fine dropped in January, followed by Hands In Mine in February. Both tracks give a clear picture of his versatility and songwriting style, and they set the tone for what is coming next. Following his releases consistently is a great way to see his growth and creativity unfold over the year. From my personal experience, Zack D. is great to work with. He takes his craft seriously, values collaboration, and creates an environment that feels productive and welcoming. He offers a wide range of services for artists and musicians at different stages. You can book studio time with him for recording sessions. He creates custom beats and handles full song production. He also offers mixing and mastering services, along with artist development for those looking to grow their sound and brand. On top of that, Zack D. offers music lessons. I personally took lessons with him and worked on guitar, piano, and drums. Those sessions were helpful, hands on, and encouraging. He meets you where you are skill wise and helps you build from there. For anyone serious about learning or improving their musical abilities, reaching out to him for lesson details is well worth it. Zack D. is also open for booking as a live performing artist. His ability to connect with audiences makes him a great choice for events that want more than background music. His performances feel intentional and engaging, and his sound fits a wide range of settings. If you are planning an event and want an artist who brings both talent and professionalism, Zack D. would be a solid choice. If you want to hear his music and stay up to date on new releases, head over to his profile and check out what he is putting out. With consistent releases planned throughout the year, there is plenty more music on the way. The Stateline area is full of creativity, and artists like Zack D. are proof of that. Whether you are a listener, an artist looking for studio support, or someone planning a live event, Zack D. is someone worth knowing and working with.

FA Fresh Face for a Rockton Favorite: Fibs Unveils Stunning Renovation Fibs has long been a staple of the Rockton dining scene, but its recent renovation has truly taken the experience to the next level. The restaurant has undergone a sophisticated transformation, trading its older aesthetic for a bright, modern look that feels both high-end and welcoming. From the updated interior finishes to the refreshed layout, the space feels revitalized, offering a polished backdrop for a casual lunch or a lively dinner with friends. It’s clear that a lot of thought went into maintaining the heart of the establishment while giving it a contemporary edge that matches the growing energy of the downtown area. The undisputed showstopper of this remodel is the installation of massive garage doors along the front-facing wall. This architectural choice completely changes the dynamics of the dining room, especially during the Stateline’s beautiful sunny days. When the weather is right, these doors roll up to erase the barrier between the restaurant and the sidewalk, flooding the space with natural light and a cool breeze. It creates an effortless indoor-outdoor flow that allows diners to soak up the local atmosphere and fresh air without ever leaving their table. It’s a game-changer for the local dining scene, especially for those who want to enjoy the season to the fullest. Beyond the impressive new look and the open-air concept, the soul of the restaurant remains focused on quality and community. The renovation serves to enhance the hospitality that locals have come to expect, providing a more vibrant environment to enjoy a meal. Whether you're stopping by to see the "garage doors" in action or just looking for a great spot to grab a bite, the new and improved Fibs is a testament to the exciting growth happening in Rockton. It’s a must-visit destination that perfectly captures the feeling of a modern community hub.

If you’re hanging out in Rockton and looking for a solid place to eat, you really have to stop by Rookies. I find myself heading there all the time whether it is for a quick lunch or a relaxed dinner. There is just something about the vibe there that feels right. One of my favorite things to do is just sit down and grab a cold beer from the draft. They always have daily drink specials running too, which is a nice little bonus for the wallet. Now, let’s talk about the food because that is the real reason I keep going back. Their pizza is easily my favorite thing on the menu. Specifically, I always get the BBQ Chicken pizza. It is hands down the best thing they make and I honestly can’t recommend it enough. If you are in the area, you seriously need to stop by this spot and give it a try. I am curious though, for those of you who go there often, what are your favorite things to order? I’m looking to branch out next time, so let me know what food or drinks I should try on my next visit.

If you’re looking for a spot in Beloit that nails the "modern industrial" vibe while still feeling like a cozy neighborhood hangout, you’ve got to check out G5 Brewing Company. I recently stopped in for a mid-week visit, and I have to say, the location itself is half the draw. It sits right on top of a hill on Gateway Boulevard, giving you some of the best sunset views in the city if you snag a seat by the windows or out on their huge patio. When you walk in, the first thing you notice is the design. It’s got this cool mix of tumbled red brick—which nods to Beloit’s industrial history—and rustic wood that feels like a mountain lodge. The "G" in G5 actually stands for the Gunderson family who started it, and you can tell they put a lot of heart into the details. It’s high-ceilinged and open, but sitting at the big island bar feels comfortable and personal. I went straight for a glass of Moon Burn. If you like a "night IPA," this is the one. It’s a hazy, juicy Pale Ale that’s brewed right there in-house. Even though it’s got those big hop flavors, it’s smooth enough to sit on for a while. That’s my favorite kind of beer—the one you can actually enjoy slowly while catching up with a friend. Most people talk about their pizza because it’s honestly phenomenal (and they even have great gluten-free options), but I decided to branch out this time. I ordered the Wisconsin Cheese Curds with a side of their chipotle ranch. Let me tell you: these are the real deal. They came out so hot the steam was still rolling off them. They were perfectly golden brown, and the portion was so big I actually couldn't finish the whole basket. The chipotle ranch gives it just enough of a kick without being too spicy. Whether you’re a craft beer nerd or just looking for a solid meal, G5 is a must-visit in the Stateline area. They’ve got about 13 different beers on tap at any time, plus a full bar if beer isn't your thing. Next time you're near the Wisconsin-Illinois line, head up the hill and grab a spot at the bar. Grab a Moon Burn, definitely get the curds, and just soak in the view. You won’t regret it!

Fresh Fish and New Faces: Why It’s Time to Revisit Ray’s in Rockton: If you are looking for a great meal to kick off your weekend, you really need to head over to Ray's Family Restaurant in Rockton for their Friday Fish Fry. The fish is incredibly fresh and tasty, and you just cannot beat the value of an all-you-can-eat special. It is the kind of local spot where the food hits the spot every single time, and having that option to keep the plates coming makes it a perfect Friday tradition for anyone with a big appetite. One thing I learned during my visit is that the restaurant is actually under new ownership now. Even if you have been a regular in the past, some things have changed with the new team in charge, so it is definitely worth stopping by to see what they are doing. I had a great experience and really enjoyed the atmosphere, so if it has been a while since your last visit, I highly recommend checking them out to see the updates for yourself. Supporting Local: Loom Home + Gifts I finally stopped by Loom Home + Gifts in downtown Beloit for the first time this week, and I am absolutely obsessed with this location! As soon as you walk in, you can tell it’s a thoughtfully curated space meant to inspire you. They offer an incredible mix of high-quality home decor, cozy candles, kitchen essentials, and stunning faux florals that can instantly elevate any room. It is truly the perfect spot if you are looking for intentional design pieces or a unique gift for someone special. What I love most is their dedication to supporting local artisans and women-owned businesses. You can feel the passion behind every item on their shelves. Beyond just home goods, they have a beautiful selection of jewelry and handbags, too. If you haven't checked them out yet, you definitely need to add a stop to their shop on Grand Avenue to your list this weekend! What are your thoughts on supporting local boutiques like this? A Perfect Day of Ink and Art at Skin Deep Studio Body Art & Beauty Recently, my wife and I decided to take a little adventure over to Roscoe, Illinois, and let me tell you, it was an absolutely amazing experience. We had been planning this trip for a while, and the stars finally aligned. Our destination? Skin Deep Studio Body Art & Beauty. For those of you who might not be familiar, Skin Deep Studio is a multiple award-winning studio that’s really something special. It’s located in a charming spot in Roscoe, and they’ve created this incredible atmosphere that feels both professional and incredibly welcoming. What really sets them apart is that they’ve masterfully combined two worlds that you might not always expect to find together: they’re both a tattoo parlor and a beauty salon. Their motto is all about making you feel confident in your own skin, and they have an extensive menu of services to do just that – everything from tattoos and piercings to skin care, lash extensions, spray tans, messages, makeup, waxing, teeth whitening, tooth gems, hair, body sculpting, and even paramedical tattoos and permanent makeup. It’s truly a one-stop-shop for all things self-care and artistic expression. Our visit was all about the ink, though! We were incredibly fortunate to work directly with the owner, Cass. From the moment we walked in, she was just a breath of fresh air. So warm, genuine, and clearly passionate about what she does. She took the time to chat with both of us, making us feel comfortable and excited. My wife decided to go first, which was perfect because I was definitely feeling a little bit of the pre-tattoo jitters. She has always been an avid reader, and she’s been reading even more than usual recently. It’s a huge part of who she is. So, she knew exactly what she wanted: a delicate, beautifully rendered book tattoo behind her ear. Watching Cass work was incredible. She was so precise and careful. The final result is just stunning – it’s the cutest, most perfect little tribute to her love of literature, and it fits her perfectly. Then, it was my turn. Now, I have to confess, I’m still a bit of a newbie in the tattoo world – this was only my second tattoo. I knew I wanted something on my chest, but I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect in terms of the process or the pain level. I mean, let's be honest, getting a tattoo is definitely an experience, but getting one on your chest... that’s got to hurt, right? Honestly, I was a bit nervous. But working with Cass made all the difference. Even before we got started, we spent some time really talking about my vision. I had an idea of what I wanted, but it wasn't fully formed. Cass didn't just listen; she truly heard what I was saying and understood the sentiment behind it. And that’s where her artistry really shone. She took my initial concepts and, adding her own incredible skill and artistic eye, helped refine them into something truly spectacular. She gave her honest opinion on placement, sizing, and detail, ensuring that the final design would look amazing on my body. It was such a great experience to collaborate with an artist who could take my vision and not just execute it, but elevate it. And you know what? Yes, getting a tattoo can be painful. There were definitely moments where it was a little intense! But honestly, because I felt so comfortable with Cass and trusted her implicitly, I managed just fine. The atmosphere she creates in the studio is calm and reassuring, and her steady hand and encouraging words helped tremendously. The entire experience, despite the physical sensation, was actually incredibly positive. Now that it’s all done, I’m absolutely in love with my new tattoo. It feels like a piece of art that truly reflects who I am, and I couldn't be happier with how it turned out. I have to say, if you're thinking about getting a tattoo – whether it's your first or your tenth – I cannot recommend Skin Deep Studio Body Art & Beauty enough. Cass and her team are truly masters of their craft, and they genuinely care about making sure you walk out feeling more confident and connected to your own skin. So, if you find yourself in or around Roscoe, do yourself a favor and pay them a visit. Whether you're in the mood for some fresh ink, a relaxing service, or just want to explore all the ways they can help you feel your best, Skin Deep Studio is the place to be. You won’t regret it! What do you all think? Leave your comments below and let me know your thoughts on our new ink!
