Why boiling your cooking water might be making it worse... 🤯🍲 We all know boiling kills bacteria, but did you know it actually concentrates chemical contaminants? Think about the math: when water boils, pure water escapes as steam, leaving the bad stuff behind in a smaller volume of liquid. If you’re cooking pasta, reducing a sauce, or simmering a homemade soup with tap water, you aren't boiling the chemicals out, you're just concentrating them. Here is what stays behind and gets worse as the water evaporates: ❌ Heavy Metals: Lead, copper, and arsenic don't evaporate. ❌ Forever Chemicals (PFAS): They don’t break down in a stockpot. ❌ Nitrates & Fluoride: Soluble minerals that pack closer together. ❌ Pesticides & Microplastics: Agricultural runoff and tiny plastics are completely heat-resistant. Your food acts like a sponge. Rice, pasta, and oatmeal absorb the water they cook in, along with whatever concentrated chemicals are left in the pot. The Fix: A Reverse Osmosis (RO) system strips out up to 99% of these heavy metals and chemicals before you turn the stove on. Ensure the only reduction you're making is a delicious sauce, not a chemical concentrate. (815)596-0075 Old Fashioned Service Modern Solutions

🛠️ Friday Strolls to Saturday Install. Two Sears Kenmore Retirements! 🇺🇸 It has been a wild, non-stop week here at The Water Man! On Friday, we were out in Marengo, IL tackling a stubborn water issue before heading over to our booth at the Buchanan St. Strolls. Then, instead of kicking back on Saturday afternoon, we were down in Plano, Illinois saving another basement from a water catastrophe. The common denominator for both jobs? Both homeowners were relying on old Sears Kenmore cabinet-style softeners that were well over 10 years old. 10+ years is a long run for a retail unit, but time eventually wins. Why They Had to Go: The Marengo Unit: The cabinet was completely filled with standing brine water. The control valve was choked out with heavy rust. Even after we stripped down the injector assembly and meticulously cleaned the venturi throat, the internal mechanics were just too far gone to draw water. Forcing a temporary fix on components that degraded would have cost the homeowner more in labor than the system was worth. The Plano Unit: This one didn't suffer a mechanical valve failure, it simply started leaking, threatening to flood the utility area. The Upgrade: Heavy-Duty Purity 🧼💧 We retired both of those old cabinet systems and replaced them with our premium mid-plate multi-media setups! Instead of just softening the water or cramming a tiny resin tank into a salt bin, these professional twin-tank builds feature an internal mid-plate design. This allows us to pack the tank with high-grade activated carbon on top to scrub out foul tasting chlorine, chloramine, and chemical odors, while a heavy-duty 10% cross-linked resin bed on the bottom completely eliminates the hard minerals. No more leaks, no more standing water, and no more chemical tastes, just crisp, perfectly soft, clean water flowing through both homes. Now that the Saturday afternoon install in Plano is wrapped up, it's finally time to pack up the tools and enjoy the rest of the weekend! (815)596-0075 Old Fashioned Service Modern Solutions

Clear Water, Ruined Laundry? Here’s What’s Actually Happening... 🧺❌ You pull a fresh load of white sheets out of the washing machine, and instead of crisp clean linen, they’re stained a dull, rusty orange. You check the tap water in a cup and it looks crystal clear. What gives? That is exactly the nightmare a homeowner in Wonder Lake was dealing with. Take a look at their washing machine drum in the photo, completely stained a dark, metallic orange from years of untreated well water. The "Clear-Water Iron" Trick This happens because of ferrous iron. When it first comes out of your well, it’s completely dissolved and invisible to the naked eye. But the second it hits the air in your toilet bowl, or gets mixed with warm water and laundry detergent in your washing machine, it oxidizes. That invisible iron instantly turns into physical red rust particles, staining everything it touches. A standard water softener alone can struggle and quickly get "gunked up" by heavy well iron. That's why we brought out the heavy hitter for this job. Unlike regular softeners, this advanced system features specialized crystal media that is physically attracted to iron and manganese first. Plus, it has a built-in chlorine generator that sanitizes the system during every regeneration, ensuring iron bacteria can never slime up the tank. Now, this Wonder Lake family has one single, streamlined system that removes the microscopic clear-water iron before it can stain. Softens their hard water completely. Keeps their laundry crisp, their fixtures bright, and their appliances running efficiently for years to come. Tired of your washing machine acting like a rusty tie-dye kit? Give The Water Man a call today. Let's get your water acting as clean as it looks! 🥤✨ (815)596-0075 Old Fashioned Service Modern Solutions

Well, the word is officially out! 🚗💨 We don’t typically drive quite this far, but when a customer gets referred to us because they are in desperate need of a new iron breaker, we are going to do whatever it takes to help them out. Today, the truck headed out to Minooka, IL. Even though it’s about an hour and 45 minutes away from our shop, we were incredibly thankful for the referral and wanted to deliver that good old-fashioned service. For this job, we tied our new iron breaker right into their existing system, positioning it perfectly right before their Kinetico water softener. The great thing about our iron breakers is their versatility, we can easily add one to absolutely any existing system you already have in your home. 🛠️⚙️ Sometimes, delivering quality service means going the extra mile, literally. A huge thank you to everyone who continues to pass our name along. Word-of-mouth is everything to a small business, and we don’t take it for granted! 💧 (815)596-0075 Old Fashioned Service Modern Solutions

To Remineralize, or Not to Remineralize? That is the Question. 💧⛰️ When we install a Reverse Osmosis (RO) system, we’re giving you the purest water possible by stripping out 99% of everything, including the natural minerals. For some homeowners, that "blank slate" crispness is exactly what they want for the perfect cup of coffee or tea. But for others, adding a remineralization filter is a must-have to bring back that natural "mountain spring" taste and alkaline balance. The Great Debate: Team Pure: You love the ultra-clean, neutral taste. Perfect for humidifiers, irons, and purists who want zero interference with their brew. Team Mineral: You prefer a smoother "mouthfeel" and those added electrolytes like calcium and magnesium for better hydration and pH balance. We see it both ways, some folks swear by the mineral kick, while others don't notice a difference at all. We want to know your take. Do you prefer your water stripped down to the basics, or do you like those minerals added back in? Drop a 1 for Pure or a 2 for Mineral in the comments! 👇

🔍 I Spy With My Little Eye... A Tankless RO! Today’s mission was delivering high-performance water to a busy office staff while navigating a super tight space under the sink. When it came to feeding this beautiful LG French Door Fridge, we had a choice, a traditional RO system with a bulky tank, or the sleek, high-output InterFlo QuadPro SST. After discussing the options, we both agreed that Tankless was the way to go. Why? Superior Water Pressure. No more waiting forever to fill a glass at the fridge. More room for cleaning supplies and less clutter. You’re getting "on-demand" filtration every time you push that button. I’m also taking some recent advice to heart, less "just pipes" and more "people!" So, here’s the face behind the Old Fashioned Service you’ve come to expect. 💧 Does your office fridge need a performance boost? Give The Water Man a call! Old-Fashioned Service for Modern Water Woes! 💧 Ever notice rust-colored staining on your laundry and wonder if you need a whole arsenal of equipment in your basement? That’s exactly what a local family of five in Machesney Park, Illinois was facing until today! With 24 grains of hardness and about 1 ppm of iron, the homeowner was convinced they needed a standalone iron filter to clear up the staining. But we believe in doing the job right with the right equipment. Instead of selling them an extra, unnecessary piece of equipment, we specified and installed a rugged, high-capacity system built to handle the load. Commercial-Grade Components that are built to last, featuring our American made Matrix valve and high-durability resin. Testing the Waters…….Ferrous vs. Ferric Iron 💧 Have you ever watched a glass of water turn color after sitting out, or noticed stubborn rust stains in your sink? When we test your water right on your kitchen counter, we're looking to see exactly what's hiding in your supply. Iron typically shows up in two different forms, and the testing process helps us tell them apart so we can recommend the right treatment for your home's plumbing. Ferrous Iron (Dissolved or "Clear" Iron)The water comes out of the tap completely clear, but changes color as it oxidizes when exposed to the air. This is the iron that leaves stubborn red-orange stains on sinks, fixtures, and laundry. Ferric Iron (Undissolved or "Red" Iron) The water comes out of the tap already discolored, cloudy, or reddish-orange. The oxidation reaction has already happened underground or in the pipes before it reaches your glass. We don't believe in guessing when it comes to your water. By testing your sample on-site, we can immediately identify the type of iron and mineral levels present, ensuring you get the exact equipment you need to keep your pipes flowing clean. Keep Your Pipes Flowing Clean! 💧 Ever wonder what's hiding inside your plumbing? Hard water minerals can build up over time, stealing your water pressure and aging your pipes from the inside out. Installing a reliable water softener stops that scale buildup in its tracks. It keeps the water flowing through your home as crisp and clear as it should be, protecting your plumbing and appliances. 💧 What’s Inside Your Water Softener (And What Destroys It)? 💧 Ever wonder what actually happens inside your water softener tank? It all comes down to resin beads. These tiny, durable beads are the workhorses of the system. Through a process called ion exchange, they attract and hold onto the hard minerals (calcium and magnesium) in your water, swapping them for soft sodium ions. But not all water treats these beads the same way! Hard Water fills up the resin's capacity, requiring regular salt regeneration to clean and recharge them. Iron-Heavy Water can coat the beads, making them less effective over time unless treated with iron-clearing solutions. Chlorinated Water (The Destroyer) is the biggest culprit behind premature system failure. 🚨 Case Study: 20+ Years of High Chlorine 🚨 We recently pulled the resin out of an older 20-year-old unit that had been dealing with high levels of chlorine. Instead of tough, individual beads, we found a congealed, "orange mush." High levels of chlorine act as an oxidizer, breaking down the chemical cross-links in standard resin, causing the beads to swell, break apart, and melt together. When resin turns to mush, you can experience Zero softening capacity A major drop in water pressure Strange, shuddering sounds from the unit To prevent this kind of breakdown, we install Mid-Plate Systems. The top chamber uses carbon to scrub the chlorine out of the water to protect the resin. The result? Premium 10% cross-linked resin that stays clean, tough, and lasts for decades. Curious about what’s lurking in your water? Let's test it and find the right solution for your home! 🥤 (815) 596-0075 Old Fashioned Service Modern Solutions

🧊 Crystal Clear in Woodstock! 🧊 Today’s install in The Community of Woodstock, Illinois was all about capacity and clarity. Most standard Reverse Osmosis systems come with a 3 or 4-gallon tank, which is fine for a couple of glasses of water. But for a busy household that loves their ice and uses purified water for cooking, those small tanks can run dry right when you need them most. We installed a premium RO system equipped with an upgraded 14-gallon storage tank. Why go big? Even with a high-demand fridge and multiple people filling up water bottles, they won't run out. By connecting this to the fridge, they are going to see (and taste!) the difference immediately. Say goodbye to cloudy, "stinky" ice cubes and hello to crystal-clear, restaurant-quality ice. Our multi-stage filtration strips away the heavy chlorine and minerals typical of local water, leaving nothing but pure H2O. Pure water on tap, better-tasting coffee, and clear ice for the win! 🥤✨ (815) 596-0075 Old Fashioned Service Modern Solutions

💧 From Salt-Hog to Super-Efficient! 💧 Check out this before and after from today’s transformation! We pulled out a 25 -year-old "autotrol" unit in The City of Loves Park, Illinois that had definitely seen better days. The resin was shot, and it was making some odd noises. The homeowners were going through TWO 50lb bags of salt every single week just to keep up. We replaced it with our modern Mid-Plate Softener. This isn't just a softener; it’s a dual-threat system. We use High-grade carbon to scrub out every drop of chlorine, and Premium 10% cross-linked resin for rock-solid softening. Even with the chlorine settings dialed up "aggressive" to ensure total protection, this family is going from 400lbs of salt a month to less than 50lbs. Better water. Less heavy lifting. Lower bills. 💧 What you can’t see in your water matters City water is treated and disinfected, and that’s a good thing. But even treated water can still contain microscopic contaminants, including parasites like: • Giardia • Cryptosporidium 🦠 What are they? These are parasites, not just bacteria. They form a protective shell called a cyst, which makes them more resistant to standard treatment methods and allows them to survive in water. ⚠️ Why it matters Because of that protective shell, they’re harder to remove than basic contaminants. They can pass through lower-quality filtration, which is why proper filtration is key for added protection and peace of mind. 💡 We offer options like the Interflo 14 filtration system, designed to provide fine filtration capable of reducing cysts like giardia and cryptosporidium as well as chlorine and microplastics. ✔️ Simple ✔️ Effective ✔️ Cost-friendly ✔️ Great added protection for city water homes Old Fashioned Service Modern Solutions. Is your shower actually adding chemicals to your body? 🚿🚫 Most people worry about what’s in their drinking water, but here’s the kicker, your skin is your body’s largest organ, and it’s "drinking" every time you hop in the shower. As I explained in this recent talk, when chlorine hits organic matter in our source water, it creates Trihalomethanes (THMs). These aren't just a "bad taste" issue, studies from the EPA and NIH have linked long-term exposure to some serious health concerns. Because THMs turn into a gas in hot water, you’re actually inhaling them in the steam before you even finish washing your hair. Ready to stop "inhaling" your water? Let’s talk about a whole-house carbon solution. Stay tuned for more video! (815)596-0075

Stop buying plastic bottles and start drinking "The Water Man" quality right from your kitchen sink! 🚰✨ We get a lot of questions about how to get that "bottled water" taste without the hassle of a bulky Reverse Osmosis tank under the sink. Meet the InterFlo IF-14. This isn't your average hardware store filter. The IF-14 is a high-capacity powerhouse that we install directly on your cold water line. Why we love the IF-14: ✅ Serious Protection: It’s certified to rip out over 99% of Lead and Cysts, and nearly 95% of that "pool water" chlorine smell. ✅ Full Flow: Most filters slow your faucet down. This one delivers 2.0 gallons per minute, so your pots fill fast and your sprayer stays strong. ✅ Massive Capacity: With a 7,900-gallon rating, you usually only have to swap the cartridge once a year. ✅ Mess-Free: A quick twist-lock design means you can change the filter in seconds without needing a bucket or a wrench.
